Liverpool are painfully short in midfield and are lacking energy, guile and need someone to control the flow of games in their favour. Brendan Rodgers didn’t address this issue in the summer, instead targeting his defence and wide attacking positions. However, after just 10 Premier League games, it is evident that the Northern Irishman needs to resolve this problem in January. One player that would drastically improve the side is Yann M’Vila. The Frenchman has been in Russia, with Rubin Kazan, since January after a tumultuous time in France with Rennes, came to an end. Controversy seems to have followed M’Vila around with him but he has settled down at Rubin and could be a fantastic signing for Liverpool.
In the first-half of last season, in Ligue 1, M’Vila won 72% of his duels, including him winning 18 of his 24 tackles and 30 out of 41 headed duels. That percentage was the third-highest at Rennes in the time period; he was also third-highest for passing accuracy with a superb 86%.
M’Vila is a destructively elegant central midfielder. If Rodgers wants a midfielder who can break up play, as well as control the tempo of the game from central midfield, he shouldn’t be looking any further than M’Vila.
If it wasn’t for his poor attitude over the last few years, he’d have probably signed for a top European club. However, he is still only 23 and can easily be matured.
In the Russian Premier League this season, he played 14 games. He has completed 88% of his passes, which is the best accuracy at Rubin Kazan for anyone who has passed more than 10 times.
He also has completed the most passes in the Russian league this season, with 770. The nearest player is Zenit’s Axel Witsel with 724 completed passes with an accuracy of 86%.
Out of those 770 passes, he has made 6 key passes and assisted once. In comparison to Lucas Leiva at Liverpool, M’Vila’s passing is superior. The Brazilian has only made 3 key passes this season, but has a pass accuracy of 89%. However, his total number of successful passes is fewer than M’Vila, having completed 439.
Lucas’ duel success rate is far less superior than M’Vila, too, having won just 56% of his in the Premier League having played six less matches.
Everything about M’Vila should attract Liverpool’s interest. He is a fabulous central midfielder who wouldn’t cost Liverpool much money considering his talent. He would easily step into Rodgers’ midfield and command a starting position every week and it wouldn’t take too long before he’s considered one of the best central midfielders in England.
If I was a scout at Liverpool, I’d be nudging Brendan Rodgers and telling him to think seriously about signing Yann M’Vila.
The wait is over...
