Virgil van Dijk would fit in at Barcelona or Real Madrid – Jamie Redknapp

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk is good enough to fit in at Barcelona or Real Madrid, according to Jamie Redknapp.

The Dutch centre-back has excelled for Saints since joining from Celtic last September, performing consistently to become one of the stand-out defenders in the Premier League.

Southampton have lost the likes of Dejan Lovren and Toby Alderweireld to other clubs in recent seasons, and former Saints midfielder Redknapp believes Van Dijk is good enough to play for Europe’s elite sides.

“Toby Alderweireld edges him as the best centre back in the league but he’s not far behind,” he said on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday programme.

“Van Dijk’s the ideal modern day centre back and would fit in at Barcelona or Real Madrid; he’s that good.”

Van Dijk has formed an excellent partnership with Southampton captain Jose Fonte since joining, with the two immediately developing a mutual understanding.

Their presence has seen Saints keep six successive clean sheets in all competitions heading into Sunday’s home match against Burnley at St Mary’s.

The 25-year-old cost Southampton a reported £11.5 million at the beginning of last season, and although they won’t want to lose one of their star players, he would certainly be worth much more now.

Virgil van Dijk has averaged 12 defensive actions per Premier League game this season.
