The Netherlands call up 17-year-old Ajax prospect Matthijs de Ligt – but who is he?

17-year-old Ajax starlet Matthijs de Ligt has been called up to the Netherlands senior squad for the World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria and the friendly against Italy.

The talented centre-back has previously represented his country at U19, U17, U16 and U15 levels and will hope to make his senior debut during this set of fixtures.

De Ligt’s call-up comes despite the fact that he has mainly been involved at youth level for Ajax this season as opposed to the senior side.

Indeed, he has made just 13 first-team appearances this campaign across all competitions.
