Paul Merson: Lukaku’s inconsistency shows why Chelsea sold him

Paul Merson believes the inconsistent form of Everton’s star striker Romelu Lukaku is a constant reminder why Chelsea decided to sell him, as per Sky Sports.

Lukaku hit a brace against Southampton earlier in the campaign, but has failed to score in any of his other five Premier League encounters. He did, though, hit a brace against Barnsley in the second round of the Capital One Cup late last month.

Merson said: “Romelu Lukaku interests me; he will get four in four and then he reminds us why Chelsea let him go. He’s a handful but he’s inconsistent.”

Gareth Barry: Barkley can match Gerrard and Lampard

The Belgian forward spent a season on loan at Everton before moving to Goodison Park on a permanent basis for £28 million (fee via BBC Sport) in the summer of 2014.

Still only 22, Lukaku has long been tipped for stardom, but so far has only shown his ability in patches. When the 6ft 3in striker is at his best, his pace and power can cause a multitude of problems for defences, but there are other occasions when he fails to make a substantial impact.

Everton are one of a clutch of Premier League teams to have taken nine points from their opening six league fixtures, and Roberto Martinez’s side will be hopeful of prevailing when they travel to face West Bromwich Albion on Monday night.

Following that, Everton will host Liverpool in the latest Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, before taking on Manchester United the following week.

Romelu Lukaku has won 44% of his duels this season.
