Manchester City won’t beat Chelsea to Premier League title, says Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has insisted that Manchester City will not win the Premier League title, despite his side thrashing West Ham 4-0 last night.

City closed the gap between themselves and Chelsea to ten points with victory at the London Stadium, but remain in 6th place, with Guardiola not confident of his team turning their poor league position around to mount a title challenge.

“Only Chelsea can lose it,”the Spaniard said. “Look at how many they’ve lost in the last 16. They’re not going to lose four or five in the games they have left.

“But anything can happen in football. You have to be there trying to win our own games. After that, if the opponents don’t win, that’s better. We are not thinking about big goals at the moment because the gap is too much.”

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was present at the London Stadium to see City’s comfortable win, but Guardiola believes that the Italian has nothing to panic about.

“He [Conte] doesn’t have to be too worried about what he saw today,” Guardiola added. “He’s 10 points in front of us. Only Chelsea can lose the Premier League.”

Chelsea have lost just three Premier League games this season, putting the title virtually out of City’s reach – leading Guardiola to focus mainly on Champions League qualification.

“To qualify for the Champions League and fight until the end, you have to make a good run of victories, otherwise it will be impossible,” Guardiola explained.

“It’s a mistake to think about Chelsea when you are 10 points behind. You have to think about winning games. We started well, but we’ve been inconsistent since.”

Guardiola gave teenager Gabriel Jesus his debut in the comprehensive victory and the Brazilian repaid his manager’s faith by assisting Kevin De Bruyne’s opener before scoring himself in the 39th minute.

Manchester City have averaged 59% possession this season.
