Real Madrid star Luka Modric is “one of the best midfielders ever”, according to former Milan and Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko.
Ex-Tottenham midfielder midfielder Modric is set to turn out for Croatia in their 2018 World Cup qualifier against Shevchenko’s Ukraine this weekend.
The 40-year-old former Ballon d’Or winner talked up the challenge in front of Ukraine, highlighting key man Modric has an all-time great.
“I wish for everything to go very well for us”, he told Goal.
“I mean, Croatia have a great team, with such great, talented players.
“[Having] one of the best midfielders ever like Luka Modrić, and playing up front: [Mario] Mandžukić, [Nikola] Kalinić, [Mateo] Kovačic…it’s a strong team.
“We have to be very well prepared, and we play on chances, I think Ukraine have a good chance. We are very strong at home.”
The 31-year-old controlling midfielder, who also captains his national team, graduated from Dinamo Zagreb’s esteemed academy before relocating to Tottenham Hotspur in 2008.
During his time in England he managed 17 goals and 27 assists across 160 matches in all competitions.
A standout Euro 2012 saw Real Madrid part with around £25m for his services and he has to date made 214 appearances (11 goals, 32 assists) playing a pivotal role in their last three European Cup triumphs.
Such is his status and importance to Los Blancos the Croat signed a new contract extension last October keeping him at the Bernabeu until June 2020.
