The 11 best records Lionel Messi holds

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi broke yet another record last night as he surpassed Gabriel Batistuta as Argentina’s all time top goalscorer.

His audacious free kick against the USA in the semi-finals of the Copa America was his 55th goal for his country, more than any other player in their history.

In what has been an illustrious career for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, this record was just one of many he has broken since his debut for the Catalan club in 2004.

Just a few of his other records include:

All time top scorer for Barcelona – 481

All time top scorer for Argentina – 55

Only player to have scored in six different club competitions twice – 2011, 2015

Most official goals in a calendar year – 91 goals (2012)

Most consecutive league matches scored in – 21 matches (33 goals)

Fastest player to reach 300 goals in Europe’s top 5 leagues – 334 matches

Youngest player to reach 100 Champions League appearances

Only player to finish Champions League top scorer in four consecutive seasons

Only player in La Liga history to score 20+ goals in eight different seasons

Most hat tricks in La Liga for Barcelona – 26

Youngest Argentinian to score at a World Cup – 18 yrs 357 days (2006)

The Argentina captain’s goal last night was the second in a 4-0 rout of the Americans that put them into the final of the Copa America for consecutive years. He also provided two assists.

He will now lead them out on Monday against either Colombia or Chile – who beat them in the final last year – in a bid to win his first trophy for the Argentinian senior team.

Lionel Messi created 73 chances in La Liga last season
