Ian Wright believes Louis van Gaal made a mistake by selling Danny Welbeck to Arsenal, and he has backed the England international to prove his quality at the Emirates, reports the Daily Star.
Welbeck was surplus to requirements at Old Trafford following the arrival of Radamel Falcao, and he completed a move to Arsenal on the final day of the transfer window.
Louis van Gaal has said that Welbeck’s goalscoring record was not up to the required level since his departure, and Wright believes those comments will inspire the England international at his new club, particularly as he will get a chance in his favoured central role.
Wright said: “He’s made a mistake for me and I hope Danny proves him wrong.
“He’s got every opportunity to show [that he shouldn’t have been sold].
“He will get an opportunity here to play in the no.9 role and he has an opportunity to show [Van Gaal] he’s made a massive mistake.”
Welbeck made his Arsenal debut in the 2-2 draw with Manchester City. The forward hit the post with an early chance, but he impressed with his energy and link-up play, and he was taken off in the second half after picking up an injury.
Welbeck scored 0.55 goals per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season.
