Giovanni Simeone, 22, has been playing in Serie A since the start of last season, joining current club Fiorentina from Genoa during the summer transfer window.
The striker has scored three times in all competitions so far for Fiorentina and father Diego believes he could go far in football.
“The player I’d like to coach is my son Giovanni,” the Atletico manager told Cadena SER, as reported by Goal.
“I love his skills, I think he can become a great striker. He is physically strong and he runs up and down the pitch, he works for the team and is hungry to win games.
“It’s always hard, however, to train your son. Just look at Michel who is coaching his son Adrian at Malaga. It’s not easy.”
How does Giovanni compare to Atletico’s current strikers?
Giovanni started his career at River Plate in Argentina before making his move to Europe in 2016.
Having worked with the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Diego Costa, Radamel Falcao and David Villa, Diego Simeone has had experience working with some of the best strikers in the world.
Of his current crop, Griezmann stands out above the rest averaging 0.47 goals per 90 minutes and a shot accuracy of 88%.
However, Giovanni does hold himself well against Atletico’s other strikers including club hero Fernando Torres.
Giovanni’s two goals in Serie A have come at a rate of 0.32 per 90 and the Argentine also averages more shots per 90 than Atletico’s strikers with 3.53 per 90.
The 22-year-old is, however, let down by his shot accuracy as just 31% of his shots have found the target and Giovanni has also won just 23.64% of all duels.
