Premier League duo Chelsea and Arsenal sent scouts to Portugal to watch Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho over the weekend, with the Blues reportedly leading the race to sign the 22-year-old.
They are unlikely to have been too impressed with a needless red card earned by the young midfielder but it shows that the London pair are both still interested in bringing Carvalho to the Premier League, as backed up by reports in Portugal.
As well as Arsenal and Chelsea fellow Premier League team Manchester United are also interested in Carvalho and it appears as though he could be leaving Sporting before the end of the transfer window.
New Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has made signing a defensive midfielder a priority and Carvalho is one of the names being mentioned along with Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal.
Arsenal have plenty of central midfielders but most are more offensively minded and very few are defensive players, which does mean there is a space in their team.
The Chelsea link is slightly stranger given that if Carvalho signed for the Blues he would be behind Nemanja Matic and John Obi Mikel, though nonetheless the Express report that the Blues are favourites to land the player, who has a release clause of £35m, as it stands.
William Carvalho won seven tackles for Portugal during the World Cup.
