Atletico Madrid have confirmed that they have completed the signing of highly rated goalkeeper Axel Werner from Atletico Rafaela, and have loaned the player straight out to Boca Juniors.
The La Liga side have announced on their official website that the 20-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year deal at the Vicente Calderon.
Last season’s Champions League runners-ups are in a strong position between the sticks with Jan Oblak and Miguel Angel Moya both available to Diego Simeone and therefore Werner will spend the season on loan at Boca Juniors in the Primera División.
Werner made the break into the Rafaela first team in the 2014-2015 campaign but wasn’t named the new first choice until March of this year. He played 11 times in the league for his side.
Werner was selected for the Argentinian Olympic side this summer but the youngster didn’t feature in any of his nations’ matches as they were eliminated in the group-stages, after finishing third in Group D.
The shot-stopper has also represented his country at U15, U17 and U20 level, and seems set to develop into one of Argentina’s top goalkeepers.
Werner will now be hoping to impress his new manager further in his native Argentina before returning to Madrid for next season.
