Lyon complete signing of defensive youngster Kenny Tete from Ajax

Lyon have completed the signing of right-back Kenny Tete from Ajax.

The Dutchman, who has been capped six times by his country at senior level, joins for a fee of around €3 million (£2.65 million).

Crystal Palace had been interested in signing Tete, as reported by the Croydon Advertiser, but the defender elected to join Lyon instead.

Tete, now 21, joined Ajax’s academy at the age of ten and progressed through the ranks at the club before breaking into the first-team, going on to make 55 senior appearances.

Although mainly deployed as a right-back, he is capable of playing anywhere across the backline if required. He was part of the Ajax team that reached the final of the Europa League last season.

Lyon finished in fourth place in Ligue 1 last season and are determined to fare even better next campaign, although they have had to cope with the departures of Alexandre Lacazette and Corentin Tolisso, while Maxime Gonalons and Mathieu Valbuena have also left.

It is clear to see why Lyon were so eager to bring Tete to the club – although his game time was limited he averaged six defensive actions per game in the league last season, while he won 60% of the headed duels that he contested. Furthermore, the prospect retained possession well as he completed 85% of his attempted passes.
